Professional characteristics

Michaela Šavrnochová graduated from the Department of Social Work at the Faculty of Education, Catholic University in Ružomberok in 2012 with a PhD in social work. Since 2013 she has worked at the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Education, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica.

Her pedagogical activity focuses, in particular, on the prevention of socio-pathological phenomena, social work with families, social counseling and social work with addicted clients. Within social work she has long been active in the field of substance and non-substance addictions, focusing on clients and their families at all levels of prevention (social work with the family in the complex treatment process of an addicted family member, co-dependence in families with an addicted client, resocialization of addicted clients, position of socio-therapeutic and self-help clubs in aftercare). Her research and publication also focuses on counseling interventions for families with a child suffering from fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and on alcohol misuse among children and adolescents in Slovakia. In recent years, she has also researched the issue of excessive use of the Internet by adolescents in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Department of Addictology of the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague, focusing on socially disadvantaged environments. Michaela has co-authored and published several scientific studies on this topic at the highest international level. She is the author and co-author of several scientific monographs, chapters in university textbooks, scientific papers and research reports published in domestic and foreign journals. In terms of project activities, she has been the lead researcher and co-researcher in several national and international scientific research and educational projects. As part of her continuous studies, she completed several certified trainings and courses in the field of addiction (addiction counseling, motivational interviews, socio-psychological course addressing the method of short-term drug addiction intervention). She has participated in the organization of several international scientific conferences and professional seminars. She has reviewed a number of scientific monographs, university textbooks and scientific studies. At the department, she has been responsible for the implementation of professional trainings in close cooperation with organizations and institutions operating in the field of social work. Since 2012, she has been a member of the Association of Educators in Social Work, where she currently holds the position of secretary (since 2018). She is a member of the executive committee of the Center for Education and Research of Seniors at the Faculty of Arts, University of Prešov. Since 2020, she has been a member of the editorial board of the professional journal "Addictology in Preventive and Therapeutic Practice".
