The Centre for Arts and Culture (CUK) was established through the merger of the Department of Music Culture and the Department of Fine Arts Culture. Its mission is to create conditions for the development of culture and the arts at the Faculty of Education in Banská Bystrica. The Centre’s professional activities are developed across three main areas – pedagogical, scientific, and artistic. CUK participates in the professional training of future pre-primary and primary school teachers in the fields of music and art education. It supports and fosters students’ artistic creativity not only in practical artistic domains, but also in terms of its meaningful use and application in the educational reality of schools.
In the field of music, the Centre builds on the activities of the former Department of Music Culture and actively organizes major international scientific and artistic events, such as Cantus Choralis Slovaca – an international symposium on choral singing, and Academica Banská Bystrica – an international competitive festival of university choirs.
An integral part of the Centre for Arts and Culture is the continuous activity of three university artistic ensembles of the Mladosť group:
• the University Mixed Choir Mladosť (since 1969),
• the University Folklore Ensemble Mladosť (since 1971),
• the University Chamber Orchestra Mladosť (since 2008).
In the field of visual arts, CUK organizes art workshops for employees of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica and their family members. Every summer, it runs the Children’s Plein Air – a summer day camp for children aged 5 to 12, offering opportunities for creative exploration, artistic experimentation, and adventure. It also provides a ceramics club for pupils of the U Filipa Primary School in Banská Bystrica.
